DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WORK
SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS

The department is beneficiary of a special award, the Nina A. Montgomery Memorial Scholarship, originated to perpetuate the memory of a former student (Class of 1975) who was fatally injured in an automobile accident. The award is meant for a student pursuing a degree in social work. Academic achievement, good character, citizenship, and need are strong endorsements in the selection of the scholarship recipient. The departmental office has the application forms.

A scholarship has recently been established in memory of Robert J. and Joanne C. Sheskey. Mr. Sheskey was an educator for may years in Nelsonville and Mrs. Sheskey was a social worker at the Athens County Welfare Department. Both dedicated their careers to community service and helping others. The scholarship is available through the Financial Aidoffice to incoming freshmen, from Nelsonville-York High Schools, who plan to major in education or social work.

Last year we have launched a development campaign with tow purposes. The departmentwants to recognize students for outstanding scholarship and service. The fist is toestablish a scholarship fund to be awarded annually to a social work major. Our goalis to endow the scholarship. The second purpose of the campaign is to create a communityservice fund to honor a graduating senior for community service beyond the fieldplacement requirements. This fund will also provide support to undergraduate studentsparticipate in professional conferences. workshops, and community service activities.
